In 2023, Fig Tree Pocket began implementing BYOD. BYOD starts with Year 5 students bringing laptops at the beginning of the year and Year 2 students bringing iPads from the beginning of Term 2. Students continue using their device the following year so that in 2024 Year 5 & 6 students and Year 2 & 3 students will be able to use their own devices.
Fig Tree Pocket State School believes in using technology as a creative tool, as well as teaching students the skills to navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of a digital world. This is the continuation of over ten years of developing technology use, systems and pedagogy at FTP, including the meaningful use approach.
What is meaningful use? (video link)
Purpose of BYOD over using limited shared devices:
- Efficiency – better use of class time with faster saving, signing in and task access
- Access – students accessing devices when they need them, not when they can book them
- Functionality – Personalised to students needs
- Home school connection – allowing parents to see what students are discovering in class.
Device management
- We strongly recommend the use of Microsoft Family and Apple Family for device supervision and limits. We are happy to help with the set-up of these.
For detailed information regarding the program, please refer to the documents in the Support and Resources section of the website. Parent information sessions as well as device support sessions, to assist in device setup, are held the prior to students beginning the program.
Device Selection
As long as a device meets the minimum specifications, it can be new, second hand or repurposed. The minimum specifications as well as further information are included in the detailed device requirements, which covers both iPads and laptops, in Support and Resources.
If you wish, you can purchase through the JB Hi-Fi Portal external link. The school code FigtreeBYOD24. A summary as well as links to devices from other suppliers can be found below. You can purchase your device from any supplier you choose.
